Anyway "I Loved" is more like it since there is no more left. Glad to hear the 04s are picking up where the 03s left off!

Great reviews (and a great example on writing one; I'll put a better effort into my next one). How could you mention Porco Alentejano without mentioning the clams?!? At least you can see them in the picture. For those unfamiliar, this dish pairs roast pork with clams. It sounds odd, but it works brilliantly. A lot of fat comes off of the pork, so a wine that can cut through it is necessary (like the reds reviewed here or, as Ryan noted, a white with high acidity. Kudos to both of you, though. I may have to hit a favorite Alentejano restaurant tonight.

didn't know where else on the site to mention this, but the results of the 2007 National Competition of Bottled Wines (it sounds better in Portuguese: Concurso Nacional de Vinhos Engarrafados) have just been published. To my surprise, the Guia 2007 is translated in English throughout; in smaller typeface, but still.... The competition has 103 wine geeks divided into 8 juries blind tasting everything. Over three weeks, they tasted 570 wines. 144 of them were awarded silver, gold, or prestige rankings. The tasting notes are pretty scant -- a few lines for each -- but those who are looking for English language resources will be pleased. The guides are in our local bookstores, but from outside of Portugal one can probably order a copy through the publishers. Contact: "guiadevinhos@gmail.com" or "by_f@mac.com".

2348 h. I'm a rank, process-oriented late-modernist in this post-post modern (blog) world...I opened the more expensive (26.50 6.5?% tax) 1996 Quinta do Carmo-- 'drink now through 2001' says the WS blurb on this North Carolina online merchant's page. Whoops.

The '91 is very slowly opening & seems to be holding up amazingly well-- some light but lively sour cherry in there! I'll check in & publish this now, but, like the proto-pop modernist old serials & 'graphic novles' (glorified comics?) used to put it,

    (...continuará...!)

...yeah, in another cultural context-- Johnny Carson!-- 'More to Come!'

I had never tried the Casa Santar until I went looking for something different for fall, and picked out, Outono de Santar. Would it be safe to say the opposite of Vinho Verde, considering the grapes are left on the vine until late in the harvest? Anyway, quite sweet and very complex with a spicy peppery ending that I wasn't expecting. On its own quite powerful, but really enjoyed it with some picante cured sheep cheese from Vila Flor...heaven. Also picked up a Pasmados from Terras do Sado, quite an edgy wine with hints of green tea and pine nuts. Left a few hundred on the shelf I can't wait to get back to. Just discovered wine blogging on Wednesdays, love the idea only drawback is there's so many days between Wednesdays. ;o)

Sorry, not sure where to put this if there’s somewhere more appropriate please let me know. You can read more about these two wines and other Portuguese bits on <a href="<a href="http://www.algarvebuzz.com " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.algarvebuzz.com "><a href="http://www.algarvebuzz.com " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.algarvebuzz.com Saude!

Sh.... I had 17 October written down als WBW #38. So we still have to taste our two wines from the Alentejo and the Douro. We will do that this Sunday and post on the 17th all the same. Makes a nice story... how we forgot WBW. Hope to be on time next month!

Some friends had foreign friends visiting this weekend, so we took them out for dinner last night. I saw the Casa de Santar 2004 on the wine list and had to try it again. Enjoyed it immensely, explained why I had chosen it, and I imagine you have six new readers of the site.

Also, went to insanely boring political meeting this morning, but was happy to find the Estremadura vintners association promoting their wares, being ignored by the politicos, and happy to spend all their time with me. Several syrahs, which surprised me, and a lot of Aragonez, which didn't. The cooperative adega wines were simple, but drinkable (and at a supermarket price below 2 euros a bottle, quite a value). The quinta wines were quite good. The Quinta da Casa Boa 2003 Touriga Nacional was very floral with a pine aroma mixed in. Plum flavors, but dry and forward in the mouth; acid very late.

I may do a little more research on the region than I had previously planned, particularly since I have to return for some EU meetings two weeks from now. Also, off in the corner I noticed they had produced kosher wine! I didn't taste this Ben Rosh, life being too short, but some others might care.

My wife bought a bottle of Conde de Santar at an estate sale which we'll be drinking or trying to drink tonight.

The reason I say "trying" is, it says vintage 1972 on the label. We hope for the best!
