Catavino: Wine Awards, Categories Without Contestants and the Birth of the Wine Blog Atlas

  • Cornell · 2 years ago
I think this is a great idea. As a interested but casual drinker of wine I would appreciate having a site that would provide a listing of specific blogs that are dedicated to a specfic wine/region/style that I want to try. Doing the current search process ends up with way too many sites to try to sift through to find one that really focuses on a region or type of wine and can provide specific information to help me become more knowledgeable. While there are others as you mention, Catavino is a good example of a wine blog that is meeting my need for information about Spanish and Portuguese wines.

Nice post. As the citizen Editor for Region Wine on Top Ten Sources, I struggle to come up with 10 Very Good Regional based Blogs. My sites <a href="<a href="http://www.KensWineGuide.com " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.KensWineGuide.com "><a href="http://www.KensWineGuide.com " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.KensWineGuide.com is about wine reviews covering all areas & my Blog (<a href="<a href="http://www.Bostonwinebuzz.com) " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.Bostonwinebuzz.com) "><a href="http://www.Bostonwinebuzz.com) " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.Bostonwinebuzz.com) has a regional twist but not focusing on regional wines. Please keep me posted on what you find for this. I need at least 2-3 more good regional wine feeds for that site. Cheers, Ken

What a fantastic idea! Although I am the other half of Catavino, I most definitely want to chime in my support. Why? Because I am fully aware of how difficult it is to even cover the Penedes region, without even considering the rest of the Iberian Peninsula. If each of us did our level-headed best to get out there and cover each region with the passion and enthusiasm we do for wine in general, imagine the invaluable resource we would create. Ryan said it beautifully when he wrote that we would truly be supporting the Web 2.0 principle! Well done Ryan!

    Ryan,

This is a terrific article, very insightful. And, this is a problem, not only with regions, but with virtually every different wine topic. That's why I put together the wine blog search engine at alawine, so people (and wine bloggers) could pull together all of the dispersed blogger information on a given topic in one place.

As far as your regional issue (and I realize this is not exactly what you're talking about), but vinography lists wine blogs in about ten different languages, and presumably some of them are more focused in those areas.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with your wine atlas; I think it's a great idea. BTW, here's a new site I just learned about

Your hammer has connected squarely with the nail on this one! I have been trying to get a couple people to do this for the Sierra Foothills of California, but no luck. I'd do it myself if I didn't have a winery to run...!

Great post! The best stories are often "local" stories -- in-depth about specific places and people.

    I recently started <a href="<a href="http://israeliwinedirect.terapad.com " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://israeliwinedirect.terapad... "><a href="http://israeliwinedirect.terapad.com " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://israeliwinedirect.terapad... to introduce Americans to outstanding and often unknown wines from Israel, for instance. (Thanks to Ken W for the shout-out above. )

Interesting post. I think the "long tail" is about bloggers blogging about what they are passionate about. For some of us, its regions. For some, a particular varietal. For some, a particular price bracket. The point of the blogosphere is that it's not one size fits all. I drink wines from all over, and that's a huge part of the fun for someone like me.
