went out for a (very rare) date with my wife last Saturday

we went to a local "gastropub" (the best one from 2007, apparently) that happened to have a very nice wine list

I ate a pig's head roullade and ostrich steak, so needed something unusual for the pairing

I chose Tilenus Crianza 2003 from Bierzo - a lovely expression of Mencia that had just the right baked fruit taste for the meat, but excellent acidity for the side dishes too. Lovely! I don't know much about Mencia, Bierzo or Tilenus, so it was a good (and lucky) discovery

I'm an RSS reader not a robot. ;) Last three wines I opened were a 2006 Finca Luzón Monastrell Jumilla Verde, a 2006 Bodega Pirineos Somontano Mesache Blanco, and a 2006 Bodegas Muga Rioja Blanco. I guess that pretty much explains why I visit your site.

I know I shouldn't be working late at night, after a day of hard work. But as wine tasting is my job I cannot help to open a sample and just enjoy it. So, just about 2 hours ago I was tasting a great fresh 2007 Sauvignon Blanc called "show". It's a vino de la tierra sample from the DO Manchuela area. I drank the wine with a home made salad while I was watching Inspector Lewis. The sample was not labeled so I didn't send you a photo. Shouldn't be too hard to find some importers out there. Great wine, great price, oops I'm working again... sorry

I am another one of those RSS-reading, wine-loving robots. I'll be visiting Barcelona in a couple months, so I've deviated from my mostly French wine consumption to explore Spanish wines in general and those from Catalunya in particular. I've discovered I've been ignoring some good wines. I recently had a bottle of 2003 Celler Marti Fabra Masi Carreras Blanco from the Emorda-Costa Brava that was downright weird, but still wonderful and delicious. Don't know if it was made in an intentionally oxidized style, or it evolved that way on its own, but intentional or not, I loved it! Looked like apple juice - slightly orange tinted gold color and smelled more like sherry than wine. On the palate, very complex, with pear, nuts, lemon, a slight touch of residual sugar, and a long finish. Excellent.

    Hi Guys,

I've been hitting the Iberian peninsula pretty hard lately (the past four years or so), and Tami's been on a major Albarino kick.

A sampling of the cellar includes:

2005 Sante Fe De Arrailolos Alentejano

    2004 Quinta dos Acprestes Douro

2005 Vale DO Bomfim Douro Reserva

    2005 Altano Douro

    2006 Campo Reales La Mancha

    2006 Almira LosDos "Old Vines"

Generally speaking, these wines deliver excellent value for the price. I really love the Vale DO Bomfim and the Altano. As you can see, not a Rioja on the list, although I try them once in a great while.

Of course, there are the occasional Chinon's and Languedoc's thrown in, plus quite a few value priced Rosso's. And, as I've rejoined the Ridge ATP, a few highly extracted Zin's are now in the rotation.

Now you've gone and got me thirsty!

I was really anxious for a tasting that started with a Esporão Reserva 1999 Red, a Tapada de Coelheiros 2002 White and a Tapada de Coelheiros 2001 White that I "discovered" in my father's cellar.

The red wine was too old (or maybe cellar condition was not ideal) and the whites despite also being old were incredibly clean with a dark and beautiful yellow.

I'll keep invading my father cellar's and I might discover something interesting!

    I. AM. NOT. A. ROBOT. (that was supposed to be said in a freaky digital computerized sounding voice...).

In any case, I have not been drinking that much Spanish wine of late, mostly because the reps have not been bringing it around for some reason. I did by a bottle of Can Blau last week, out of curiosity. And I have Eric Solomon and Jorge Ordonez tastings over the next few weeks, so much Spanish wine is in my future!

I have noticed an odd run on the Piqueras Almansa Garnacha Tintorera of late, with a few customers ordering, one in case quantity. I thought I'd be closing that item out, but ended up restocking it due to its sudden popularity!

I can't wait to read your Rioja newsletter so I can get some good tips on wines to seek out. Thanks, guys, for everything!

(Just noticed extreme overuse of exclamation points. my apologies, but apparently I was very enthusiastic when writing this comment.)
