  • As I mentioned previously, I had seen some Sherry in the U.S. with actual dates on the bottles and not just the codes. I have checked some local stores and it is the Bodegas Hidalgo, who make La Gitana, which places a month and year on their bottles. Though the only dates I saw were for months in 2005.
  • Wonderful example!!!!!!! Here is the scoop Richard. After getting off the phone with <a href="Bodegas " target="_blank">http://catavino.net/2006/07/13/lagitanna-and-madrids-summer-heat/">Bodegas Hidalgo, evidently, they are putting the date of Consumption on bottles in the USA, and not the date of bottling. Now if your bottle is mirroring what they told me at the Bodega, the bottle "should have" been consumed by X month in 2005. This is very interesting and I'm wondering how many others are finding the same dates in stores in their neighborhood. If people are finding that date, please tell me and I will happily pursue this with Bodega Hidalgo.

  • Ack! So that makes it even worse. I will definitely keep my eye out more for the Sherry dates now.

  • I don't know anything about Sherry, but I have a couple bottles stuck in the back of my liquor cabinet dating from God knows when. They have also made several international moves, meaning months at sea. I'm guessing from your comments about freshness that I ought to just throw the stuff out or give it to teenaged marines, right?
  • Well, it depends on the type of wine and where it's been. My first suggestion is to open it and see what happens. If your noise coils into your head, I'd suggest it for cooking. If, however, it is an oxidized sherry like an Oloroso or PX, you might be saved. For all you know, you may have a VORS in your liquor cabinet, standing for a Very Old Rare Sherry, or a VOS, Very Old Sherry. If this is the case, you might be in luck as they can age for decades. We will be talking about VOS and VORS sherries in the coming weeks. So stay tuned.

  • This is so cool. I love the space you have dedicated to sherry! My husband and I have been enjoying drinking sherries more and more, but had very little background information beforehand and primarily drank them after a meal. I feel empowered to do some more experimenting.

    Keep the information coming!
