Catavino: Restaurante Gaig in Barcelona: The Michelin Star Debate

  • ricard · 9 months ago
Totally with you on the smoke front, Ryan. This is a losing battle in Spain, I'm afraid. So many bad experiences I've given up. Great review, thank you. But please spell Michelin correctly, it won't do your credibility any favours!

Hi Ryan, I'm glad you at least enjoyed your birthday (thanks to Gabriella and the wine!) but I understand your disappointment in that type of restaurant. The first time I visited Barcelona, I made reservations at a very famous and classic restaurant that was even recommended by the restaurant owner at the place I worked at the time in Miami. And although the food and wine were good, our money (a lot of it!!!) could have been spent better. But the worst part was the very uptight and judgmental service we experienced by the staff (we were the youngest customers there by 20yrs) who were very stand offish without even a manager coming to our table once to check on us eventhough we saw him greet all the others. As the last customers to finish, we were left completely alone in the restaurant (no music) for 15-20 minutes well after we had finished everything while waiting for someone to come out so we could get our check!!! Lucky for us, all the smokers that night were on the opposite side of the room or else I would have added that to the list.

These types of experiences make you remember why you rarely go to fine-dining places around here........please will someplace out there stand out and be the hero?!

Re: the smoking, yeah I agree. Even though I'm a smoker, I know it's utterly wrong in a really good restaurant.

I'm sure you've tried them before but we liked Comerç24 and Cinc Sentits when we ate at them. Cinc Sentits especially (and we ate there before they got their Michelin*)

    Hey you two,

Having been fortunate enough to dine at several Michelin starred restaurants in France, including one ** that's been in the book since 1900, I must generally agree with your perception (and Andrea's) regarding the overall experience. Stuffy and overbearing service is a common theme. Granted, how often are you served lobster carved and shaped to look like a sea horse? The only such dining experience we've enjoyed was in Collioure at La Neptune. We ate out on their deck overlooking the harbor and it was wonderful. First time I ever had grilled fish with veal reduction. An ephiphany! Although I was scolded by the waiter for trying to pour Tami a glass of wine. :-)

Glad you enjoyed your birthday. You both look mahvelous!

    Hi you two
Glad you got there in the end. That really stinks about the smoke. Pun intended. I know how you feel about about the michelin experience. Trent and I go now and then to michelin restaurants and it's really hit and miss. I think the experience can totally vary from day to day pending on who's serving you, seasonal ingredients and the atmosphere. Don't give up on them yet...when you get it right you have a night that you will remember for a long time. Ours is the Waterside Inn in Bray...ahhhhhh....
    Glad you enjoyed.

Yes, the last one we went too was amazing and we haven't given up! This just didn't have the service you expect nor did the overuse of Truffles! :) Either way as with any restaurant you never know...the only issue is that you expect more when your at a "star"!

    thanks again for the opprotunity
