Good post, I have to agree with your point. I'm one of them "young wine drinkers", but I don't really care about what's the next big thing is. But many, MANY young wine lovers do, so is there really something we can do to make the portuguese winebusiness aware about the posibilities and opportunities that they now have?

GV is loud and sometimes abrasive on camera. That's just his style. You obviously agree with the substance of what he's doing.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Gary several times in person and even dining with his family. He's honest, genuine, and really seems to care about what you're doing. And I'm proud to consider him a friend.

Well it was the first time for me... the first word for Gary´s performance is "refreshing", and the second "casual"... I´ve never seen someone talking like this about wines. Here in Portugal tasting wines is something that can be frightening... i believe that tasting wines is something too share with friends and family, like Gary says. As for his passion for Portuguese wines, well we have that in common. And Ryan, you and Gabriella are making an excelent work, talking about our wines, and trying to wake up portuguese wineries for this fantastic moment to get people to know their wines. I´m with you guys, and i believe that we can make the diference, making wineries to have their own blogs, to spread information about their wines... is the only way to win!

This is a good laugh! I watched one of Gary's Portuguese tastings yesterday and I found it refreshing that someone else pronounces Portuguese worse than me.

I got to give it Gary for his passion and drive, however, watching him everyday might requiring a bit more espresso.

I think you make some great points on Portugal' s inability to successfully market their wines. They have a great product and perhaps need some help in marketing them.

    Keep up the good work

Ryan - you're right, i can see the average Portuguese retailer / winery or even importer taking zero advantage of this.

I dont think its the "chance of a lifetime" - we're talking 30 year careers here - however, its probably the biggest Portugal specific shift in a decade, so not to be passed over lightly. Lets get down to specifics here, and Ryan, you do a good job of that above, to connect with the GV crowd the producers need to embrace social media.

This is bigger than one person, this is people sharing information, directly, with each other. The milenials are a larger group than the baby boomers, and are drinking even more wine as they shift away from spirits and cheap beers. You've tens of millions of people who grew up using a computer (even the oldest milenials are just turning 30 now). As these people do everything online, and in the open, its clear that they deal with wine in the same way.

I feel like a broken record saying this now, but wineries need to empower their existing base of hard core evangelists to have the freedom and materials to market their product by weaving it into their daily actions online.

Philip, isnt that what he is saying every show? "With a little bit of me"? He mean that if he say it to his 50000 followers, and they say it to 2 more people, and 2 more, and 2 more... That's they way it goes, dont it?

Chance of a lifetime? Maybe... Maybe not.. We will not know that in yet some year's, but can they gamble on that?
  • Ryan · 1 year ago
Just to be clear I have nothing against Gary, I just can't stand watching his show. THough I am excited to see what his move to Revision3 will mean...

Phillip, we're on the same page, as you know. I really hope that Catavino and sites like Snooth and Adegga might be able to wake some of the wineries in Portugal up enough to do something different.

Philip and JIKVIG I do think that this is once in a lifetime, at least in this way. Gary loves Portugal, and I'm scared to think of what might happen if he then falls in love with Chile, before Portugal awakes....
  • JIKvig · 1 year ago
I never thought you had anything against Gary, just realiced that I might have sounded like a fanboy...

Anyways, I really hope that you are right, that Catavino, WLTV, Snooth and everybody else writing and speaking about them, are able to wake wineries in Portugal to Wine 2.0!
