Spanish Wine, Portuguese Wine, their foods, and cultures
Bodegas Alvear has been talked about on Catavino a few times now. For awhile, I have a considered them one of the best values in Spanish wine. Located in DO of Montilla Moriles, they produce sherry-esque wines from one grape, Pedro Ximenez. I’m not going to go into the whole his

Is the Fino en Rama a Sherry? I notice you called it sherry-esque so it seems like it may not be an official sherry.
As this uses the Pedro Ximenez varietal, was the wine sweet? In my limited sherry knowledge, I thought that sherries made of this varietal tended to be sweet.
Thanks,

Sherry wine are wines made in the DO of Jerez, like Champange is only sparkling wine from Champange, France. Cava is Sparkling wine from Spain.
All sherry is made using a system called the Solera system. This system of wine making, is used in many other regions as well, one of which is DO Montilla Moriles - where the Alvear wine is from. Just because you use this system has no bearing on what you call your wine.
Is that a little more clear? EIther way try the wine when you have a chance, great stuff!
