Catavino: 2003 Fino en Rama - Bodegas Alvear

  • RichardA · 2 years ago
Ok, I am a very beginner with Sherry so I have some questions.

Is the Fino en Rama a Sherry? I notice you called it sherry-esque so it seems like it may not be an official sherry.

As this uses the Pedro Ximenez varietal, was the wine sweet? In my limited sherry knowledge, I thought that sherries made of this varietal tended to be sweet.

    Thanks,

Thanks Ryan. That seemed to answer my second question well. Now, as to the first, I think that the Fino en Rama is not an official sherry, but just wanted confirmation of such. It may use a sherry grape, Pedro Ximinez, but is not from the Jerez region.

Pedro Ximenez is a Grape, sometimes used in sherry production. But often in many other regions as well.

Sherry wine are wines made in the DO of Jerez, like Champange is only sparkling wine from Champange, France. Cava is Sparkling wine from Spain.

All sherry is made using a system called the Solera system. This system of wine making, is used in many other regions as well, one of which is DO Montilla Moriles - where the Alvear wine is from. Just because you use this system has no bearing on what you call your wine.

Is that a little more clear? EIther way try the wine when you have a chance, great stuff!

It is clear now. The Fino en Rama certainly sounds interesting and I will keep my eye out for it.
